Zmeikovskie Waterfalls

Article
21.01.2026

Located 12 km from the Black Sea coast, in the upper part of the Mzymta Valley within Sochi’s Khostinsky District, the Zmeikovskie Waterfalls are part of the Sochi National Park, renowned for its rich flora and fauna.

This is an ideal and popular destination situated along the Zmeika River, whose channel never dries up thanks to numerous underground springs that feed it even during the driest periods. The river also bears another, nearly forgotten name—Dikarka—given by the area’s first settlers due to its wild and untamed nature. Locals recall this name when the river, initially calm and peaceful, transforms into a roaring, turbulent stream.

The area is well-developed, making visits enjoyable year-round and comfortable for guests of all ages. Informational signs describing local flora and fauna, as well as directional markers, have been installed for convenience. A dirt road runs along the right bank of the river, offering stunning views of this natural wonder.

History and Origin of the Name

Zmeikovskie Waterfalls

This famous cascade formed approximately 70 million years ago as a result of a powerful earthquake; the site was once the seabed of the ancient Tethys Ocean. The Zmeika River is a right tributary of the Mzymta, stretching about 6 kilometers and flowing over rocky ledges. It is believed the waterfalls derive their name from the river itself. A beautiful legend also explains the origin of the name: in ancient times, a giant serpent lived in the gorge, guarding treasures belonging to mountain spirits. When people tried to reach these treasures, the serpent transformed into a river, and its tears became the waterfalls.

What to See on the Ecotrail

Ecotrail

The ecological trail spans roughly 3 kilometers and follows a radial (out-and-back) route. A one-way hike takes about two hours due to steep ascents and descents along certain sections. The Zmeikovskie Waterfalls are perfect for family outings, romantic walks, or active gatherings with friends—offering a wonderful opportunity to immerse yourself in nature, admire mountain scenery, and cool off on hot days. The cascade system comprises five main waterfalls and numerous smaller ones. The most impressive are the First (Lower) and Spring waterfalls, where water plunges from heights exceeding 10 and 13 meters respectively, crashing loudly onto the rocks below. The water remains clean year-round but rarely exceeds 15°C (59°F) even in summer—yet many visitors still seize the chance to take a refreshing dip. Near the Lower Waterfall, amenities include a sauna and a café with gazebos where you can grab a snack or order grilled shashlik (kebabs).

The Second Waterfall splits into two streams—8.5 and 1.5 meters high—whose waters forcefully strike the rocky riverbed. It’s accessible via an easy forest path. Wooden stairs lead to the Third and Fourth Waterfalls, which stand 3 and 2 meters tall respectively. Just 150 meters upstream from the Second Waterfall lies the Third Cascade, where water flows down a rocky ledge in three distinct streams. A separate trail with wooden footbridges over the brook leads directly to it.

The Fifth Waterfall, 3 meters high, drops into a rectangular-shaped pool. Near the Fourth and Fifth waterfalls, there’s a gazebo perfect for a short rest while enjoying fresh air and picturesque views. The Sixth and Seventh waterfalls are known as the “Lace” waterfalls, as countless thin streams cascade down stone steps and ledges, creating a stunningly beautiful, melodic “lacework.” The Upper waterfall is notable for its mineral water springs.

General Route Information

General Route Information

One of the main advantages of visiting the Zmeikovskie Waterfalls is accessibility and safety: no specialized hiking gear is required. However, it’s advisable to wear comfortable, non-slip footwear. In summer, bring sufficient drinking water and a swimsuit for a dip in the natural pools beneath the cascades. The trail is beginner-friendly, making it suitable for families with children and older visitors alike. Along the way, you’ll find benches and cozy picnic gazebos—ideal spots to admire scenic views, take memorable photos, or simply enjoy a swim. The waterfalls stretch across at least one kilometer, with minimal elevation change. The path winds through dense forest shade, home to rare plant species; oak and beech trees dominate the landscape, shielding visitors from the sun even on the hottest days. If you prefer a shorter visit, you can limit your exploration to just the First Waterfall—allowing roughly 1.5 hours for the main attraction.

The complex is open year-round, though winter hours are reduced (typically 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM). During rain, water levels rise quickly and trails become slippery. In very cold winter weather, the waterfalls may partially freeze, forming fantastical ice sculptures.

The best time to visit is summer and autumn—from late May to early October. For the most spectacular sight, come in spring or early summer when the waterfalls are fullest after heavy rains and snowmelt in the mountains. Within Sochi National Park, visitors must follow park rules: do not litter, climb on rocks near waterfalls, pick plants, feed wildlife, consume alcohol, or swim in unauthorized areas. Entry to the park is paid, with ticket prices including a service fee; infrastructure ensures a comfortable experience. In the village of Izmailovka, several guesthouses offer overnight accommodations for extended trips.

Guided excursions cover natural zones around the Zmeikovskie Waterfalls and highlight the resort’s top attractions.
